Spring is Upon Us!

While the weather may not yet be showing it, spring has “officially” arrived!  Students and staff are excited to begin a well-earned break.  Before we take the time to relax I would like to reflect on the past month and share with you just a few of the highlights.

March saw much activity in the Blueberry Learning Community, most recently with our Student Led Conferences (Kindergarten-Grade 6) and portfolio reviews (grades 7-9).  These evenings provided a great opportunity for students, staff, and parents to connect and celebrate the successes of our kids, as well as a chance to identify areas for continued growth and to put plans in place to support our students.  If you were unable to attend these evenings, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher directly for an alternate appointment time.  We are always excited for the opportunity to work with our parents.

Earlier in the month, Blueberry School had three members of the Edmonton Eskimos come to our school to share their message with our students in grades 5-9 on the importance of education and the challenges of balancing athletic aspirations with their schooling.  Our students were engaged and inspired by the information that these professional athletes shared with them.

I was particularly impressed with the quality of questions that our students posed to the players.  At one point, one of our students asked Calvin McCarty “If you didn’t play for the Edmonton Eskimos, which team would you want to play for?”.  I immediately thought “Wow! What a powerful question.  Our students have evolved so far past the typical ‘How much money do you make?’ and ‘What is your favourite food’.”  It is clear that our work on critical thinking continues to have a positive impact on our students and their experiences!  …..In case you were wondering, Calvin’s response was “I would retire!”

March also saw many very successful extracurricular opportunities for our students including Speech Arts, our SEVEC exchange, Journal Games, two championship banners and a second place in basketball, and a trip to the Brier for students in grades 3 and 4.

On behalf of the staff of Blueberry School, I would like to wish you and your family a fun and relaxing Spring Break.

Sincerely,

Mr. S. Patras
