A Look Back at April’s Activities

April was again another busy month at Blueberry School with much to share and celebrate. The month started off with a bang when a member of the Edmonton Rush came to share his expertise and the basics of Lacrosse with our middle years students.  A great time was had by all as they tested their skills in a new game!

There was much reason to celebrate in April with multiple students recognized for their creativity and artwork in the Rural Crime Watch Poster Contest, with two of our student’s entries moving forward to the regional competition.

April also saw the implementation of the Junior Achievement Program at Blueberry School.  This program has helped our students connect many of their learning experiences to the real world.  Students have explored many fields of interest and are working hard to develop their entrepreneurial spirit!  I am excited for the grade 6 sale in early May with all proceeds going to Mutts Adored!

As we moved through the month of April we celebrated Earth Day with many students dressing up as “hippies” to draw attention to this worthwhile cause.  We also spent time exploring First Nation’s culture on our BLAZE day and learned about Farm Safety with presentations throughout our school.

As we look forward to May, we eagerly anticipate the arrival of our SEVEC exchange “twins”, our school and division track meets and the sharing and celebration of our AISI project for 2012-2013.  Blueberry teachers have worked collaboratively throughout the school year to explore how critical thinking and self assessment can increase the engagement of our students.  This project has led to many creative teaching and learning opportunities throughout the year for our students.  Teachers and students have explored everything from Math Journals and “What Makes a Good Problem Solver” to Hidden Heroes and Testing and Building.

As we begin the final push for this school year, I encourage you to touch base with your child’s teacher.  Send a quick email, call the school or stop by to check in on your child’s progress.  Together we can move learning forward for all of our kids!
