We’re Picking Up Momentum in the Blueberry Learning Community!

February was perhaps the busiest and most engaging month so far this year! There is much to share!

Blueberry students have had many great opportunities both within our school and with connecting their learning to the community.  Some of our girls in Grade 6 were fortunate to have attended the Women In Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology (WISEST) conference where they explored the many roles that girls can play in this traditionally male dominated area.  Not to be outdone, some of our grade 9 girls were able to attend the Women In Technology (WIT) Conference where they learned about career options for females in the world of Technology!

Also in February, many of our grade 5 students attended Hockey Hooky with the Edmonton Oil Kings where a great time was had by all! In addition, students in grades 5-9 were very fortunate to have Adarius Bowman and Jonathan Crompton of the Edmonton Eskimos  come in to speak to our students about nutrition and health. These conversations tie in so well with the work of our students and teachers on our Crunch Days, promoting healthy fruits and vegetables for all students as Blueberry School continues to be engaged in Parkland School Division’s Youth Resiliency Project!

Not only have our students been focused on nutrition, but physical health has been in the forefront as well with our Jump Rope for Heart campaign , along with some great athleticism and sportsmanship being shown by our Basketball teams, our Vancouver Sun Run team continues it’s training and our relay teams continue to compete in the Running Room Indoor Games.

As we continue to build our safe and caring learning community in Blueberry School, we are proud to be celebrating pink shirt day.  While Blueberry staff and students work everyday to ensure that our students are safe, are good citizens and are not bullied, pink shirt day serves as a great reminder to “Be an Upstander, not a Bystander”.  Students have been hearing many messages throughout the week on our school announcements about bullying and what to do to get help.  Also, our school counsellor Mrs. Weisenburger will be facilitating a conversation with each and every class on Wednesday talking about how we can all make a difference and help to create a safe school for everyone!

We can’t wait to see the great learning that March will bring our way.

Sincerely,

Mr. S. Patras
