Let’s Talk!

I originally posted this blog almost a year ago and it seems even more relevant now than ever as we are continuing to prepare for hundreds of new students who will be joining us in 2016-17. We are excited to welcome our new Gr 5 students, our Maranatha Christian Program students and those students going into grades 6 & 7 from Greystone Centennial Middle School who now fall within our attendance area.

This post was is dedicated to sharing a bit of information on communication between us at Woodhaven Middle School, and you at home.

Of course we can’t cover everything in one blog post so if you don’t find an answer you are looking for here, or you have questions, please make sure you ask your child’s teacher, Mr. Patras or Mrs. Kronewitt. We are all here to help!

As a staff, we have discussed the two way role of communication. We recognize that it is our job to ensure that information is available to our parents, and we ask parents to share with their children the responsibility to access this information.

WHAT are you going to hear about?

You can expect to hear from your child’s teacher or administration throughout the school year for many reasons (a few of which are listed below).

Celebrations!

Challenges your child may be encountering with learning or behavior

Upcoming tests or assessments

General Information about what’s being learned in the classroom

Upcoming events and field trips

… and so much more!

It takes two!

Effective communication requires a sender and a receiver, and those roles are inter-changeable. In other words, sometimes we will send you messages and I really encourage you to take the time to receive them. I know we are all extremely busy and one more email, phone call or text message just adds to the load. However, if your child’s teacher or administration have taken the time to contact you, rest assured that we have considered that your time is valuable, (ours is too 🙂 ) and we feel that the information is meaningful to you and your child.

Other times you will have information, insights and ideas that are really important to the success of your child and we need you to initiate the communication with us. We are here and really want to ensure that we are doing everything we can to support your child’s success and happiness! Call us, email us, or stop in before or after school to touch base. We appreciate it!

HOW can you expect to be contacted?

With technology today, communication can take so many forms that it’s hard to keep up.  You can rest assured that your child’s teacher will check in with you early in the year, via email, outlining specifically HOW they will be communicating with you.

Often times, the specific information we are sharing will direct the form of communication we choose. For example, if we just need to give you a heads up on an upcoming test or field trip you may receive an email or text message via Remind 101 (don’t fret, I will explain how very soon 🙂 ).  If we would like to discuss your child’s learning and how we can work together to support him/her you will likely receive a phone call or a request to come in and sit down together. You will see below many more of the ways in which teachers and administration at Woodhaven Middle School will communicate with you.

  • Our Website – you will find more information here than I can describe. Daily Announcements, Hot Lunch and Field Trip Information are just a few examples of what you can find. This is your one stop shop!
  • Blog Posts – like this one. Teachers will share with you how to find their blog if this is what they are using. You can click here for an example of a class blog from the previous year.
  • Remind 101 – some teachers will use this app to text you information about what’s coming up in the classroom or program. Mr. Patras also uses Remind 101 to share school wide information pictures of learning and other messages on his Remind 101 text feed titled “Did You Know” . You can sign up for his remind 101 feed here.
  • Our Facebook Page – a great way to stay in the loop
  • Our Twitter Feed – quick bits of helpful information
  • Phone Calls – These are often the best way of touching base so you can expect these at times throughout the year and staff will always respond to your calls so please do not hesitate to call us with any questions or concerns that you might have.
  • Conferences/Meetings – While we establish specific dates for Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences throughout the year, as well as for IPP meetings (if your child is on an Individualized Program Plan), we may contact you for a get together with your child to discuss any number of topics such as learning or behavior. You are also more than welcome to contact your child’s teacher and administration at any time to meet to with us. Please do not feel like you have to wait for an invitation 🙂

We are excited to work with you and your child in the upcoming year and look forward to seeing you at in September!

Until then…
